For the next week we will be celebrating the Lunar New Year (aka Chinese New Year) which is an important holiday for most East Asian countries.

Here are some quick facts about the Lunar New Year that you might not have known:

Red:  Red is considered a good luck color and it is also believed to scare off the “evil spirits” that would plague the local crops, and detour good fortune.

888: Much like 777 is lucky in Las Vegas, Nevada, 888 is considered lucky (not just during Lunar New Year) because in in Chinese the word for the number “8″ closely sounds like the word for “luck”, which is “fat” or “bat” (pronounced like ‘b-ah-t”).  Additionally, the word for the “hundred” also sounds like the the word for “luck”.  So, “eight-hundred-eighty-eight” sounds like “ba-bai-ba-shi-ba”, which is very lucky.

Year of the Ox (from wiki): “The Ox is the sign of prosperity through fortitude and hard work. This powerful sign is a born leader, being quite dependable and possessing an innate ability to achieve great things. As one might guess, such people are dependable, calm, and modest. Like their animal namesake, the Ox is unswervingly patient, tireless in their work, and capable of enduring any amount of hardship without complaint.”

So, we are celebrating President’s day early this year because we want to welcome our new President into office.
