Top 3 Tips to Getting Better Sleep

With so many things going on with our modern lives, some of us have a hard time getting good sleep.  I came across a few tips that helped me get better sleep and I hope it will help those of you with the same problem.

1. Avoid your task list
If you can’t sleep, don’t do anything that makes you feel rewarded.  Like doing something on your to do list that will make you feel satisfied and happy.  If you do so you are telling your body that staying awake is rewarding.  And from our simple evolutionary minds our bodies will tend to want to stay up and get more of that rewarding feeling from the things you are taking care of.  So instead, do something relaxing.  Like read a novel or meditate.

2. You can make up lost sleep
There is always that misconception that sleeping in on the weekends ruins your sleep cycle.  To an extent it does.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t make up lost sleep on the weekends.  If you need 7 hours a sleep a night and have only been getting 6 hours of sleep during the week, than you can recharge yourself by sleeping 10 hours on Friday and Saturday night to make up that lost sleep.

3. Get rid of the electronics
Your bedroom and bed should be for sleep, rest, and intimacy.  Anything more than that deprives you of the quality sleep you deserve.  So turn off the TV (better yet, don’t keep one in your bedroom).  Don’t bring in the laptop to avoid temptations of playing games, having fun, reading your favorite blogs (like this one, haha) and twittering.

Keeping a good routine before sleep and not getting yourself all excited from distractions (like fun and stress) is key to having a consistent good sleep routine.  I hope these tips can help you.
