It’s Not Cheap to be Healthy

by ericl on April 27, 2009

The country is ridden with health care costs. Many pundits blame America’s obesity problem. I try to write as many posts to help people to exercise more and eat healthier.

Cost of Healthy

Cost of Healthy

Immediate Satisfaction of Low Cost
But where’s the incentive to be healthy?  I think the source of people being unhealthy is the fact that consumer good prices don’t make it easy for most people to see the direct reward and benefit of eating healthy.  Of course being healthy has a lot of long term benefits.  Like spending more on fresher and healthier foods today to save on ailments and medical costs in the future.  But as humans have always been focused on the immediate satisfaction, the upfront costs make people move away from being healthier sooner rather than later.

Unhealthy foods are Cheaper
Take shopping for groceries as an example.  When I go to the market I noticed these things:

1.  A loaf of 100% whole wheat bread is $4.69 vs. $1.50 for a loaf of enriched white bread
2. A bottle of water costs around $2 a bottle, when a beer only costs $1.50 a bottle when buying a 6 pack.
3. An 8 lb bag of Brown rice costs around $10 ($.80 / lb), where a 50 lb bag of white rice costs $25 ($.60 / lb)

Fast food vs. Dining
Ok, some of my prices may not be exact and I’m sure you can find variances.  But my point is that it just costs more to eat healthier.  Like going out to eat for instance.  You can get a In-n-Out double double cheesburger for under $4, but it will cost you $15 if you want to eat healthy baked salmon with a side of asparagus at Macaroni Grill.

Affordable and Sensible Health for All
So with the economy going tough and people having less money to spend, the masses are eating cheaper, faster and less healthy foods.  If we want to solve America’s obesity problem for all citizens, we need to make healthy foods affordable and a choice that makes sense vs. buying the cheaper/unhealthy alternative.  Healthy foods shouldn’t be just “premium quality” foods we pay more at those specialty super markets, it should be an affordable standard.

Being healthy is important.  All of us have felt at one point in our lives that we should lose weight or exercise more.  But for me it’s always hard to stick to a plan.  Like eating healthy for instance.

    The Dollar of the Calorie

    The Dollar of the Calorie

    I Love to Snack
I always have the munchies.  I would walk around the house between meals looking for cruchy, salty or sweet snacks to eat.  My favorite are sun chips and nuts, like cashews, macadamia, and almonds.  Sometimes all of them at once.  Mmmmmmm.  Writing about it just makes my mouth salivate.

    Snacking can be good
Don’t get me wrong, snacking can be good for your health because keeping your body fed a steady stream of energy keeps you from craving bigger meals throughout the day.  So you may ask, “Then what’s the big deal about the calorie?”

    Calorie Value
Well to keep myself from eating unhealthy snacks I put a value behind each calorie I intake.  Did you know that different foods that give you the same amount of energy are worth more than others?  It’s true.

    Sugar, Meat, and Wheat
If you like sweet food (mmmm, like Chocolate Cake, one of my favs) then you should know that sugar energy when not burned off (like when you don’t go exercise) turns into fat the easiest.  But when you eat foods like meats (lean meats of course) and wheat/veggies they not only give you energy but more.  The meats have protein (that builds muscle) and the wheat/veggies have fiber (that slows down sugar going into your bloodstream).

    Value of the Dollar
So, when I look at the back of the box for nutritional value, I look at how much fat, carb and protein there is in the food.  So the value of each type of calorie can be compared.  Like when I kind of assess the value of the US dollar to be relatively cheap compared to a foreign currency like the British pound (because you get $2 US dollars for each $1 British pound).  Same so for calories.

Don’t Waste the Calories You Spend
Since everything I eat has calories, I choose to eat the ones that have more value.  I eat more veggies, whole wheats and protein.  And minimize on the rice, breads, and sugars.  If you’re going to eat, might as well make every calorie count!  Since the economy is slow, I now say Happy Eating rather than spending.  *Smile*

  • Light Away Yin Spirits with Floor Lamps

by ericl on November 26, 2007

Floor LampsUse bright floor lamps to light up your home if you live near hospitals, police stations, or cemeteries to ward off yin spirits.  Yin spirits are evil and negative to your home’s feng shui because they have a high likely chance of coming from bad situations that happen in hospitals and police stations.  And cemeteries are obvious locations for gathering spirits that for sure should be warded off.  Yin spirits zap your energy to continue to survive, so you will see yourself more vulnerable to illness and bad luck, so use those lamps to brighten up the room and create energy to ward them off.  Using a red painting or painting a wall red facing the hospital, police station, or cemetery will work as well.

  • Mirrors in Feng Shui Luck, Wealth, and the Home

Mirror Be careful when you use mirrors in your home. Do not place them facing the front door. Because all good fortune and good luck with be reflected right out the door. It is an interesting symbol, but mirrors can hurt your positive energy and reflect all your wealth, health, and luck energy right back out the door. If you must have a mirror in your foyer area, just hang it not facing the door directly.
