What does ETSY mean? A lot of people are asking. You’re probably wondering yourself right now. My lovely fiance asked me. So I tried to help her research this the other day when she saw that question on a blog comment. As she google’d, clicked from blog to blog, forum to forum, she got more and more confused. So then I stepped in and I found some answers.
"Ay, Etsy to you, eh?"
3 Years, Still No Answer
ETSY is the eBay of buying and selling all things handmade. But what does it mean? A thread since 2005 right on the ETSY website has been talking about it till this day. The suspense has been driving almost everyone crazy trying to find out what it means.
Like a self fulfilling prophesy.
My personal favorite is Easy to Sell Yourself. But if you read through the posts, it is amazing how creative you get when trying so hard to come up with the answer.

But things are more convincing on paper, black and white. So what I found was a pdf doc on the official ETSY website posted with some basic facts regarding ETSY by the “team”. Fact#3 said: “Etsy was named for Rob’s maternal grandmother.” How sweet. I love my grandma too. Anyways, who’s Rob? Read on.

So finally I found an archived news video, where Rob Kalin (co-Founder) himself said in an interview that ETSY means “And If” in Latin. He said he thought to himself that ETSY was a great idea “…and if we can make it work.”
That’s it?!?
With all things handmade on ETSY, the curiosity around the name has been exciting and full of suspense. But I thought the actual answer was anti-climatic. Maybe I’m wrong? Do YOU know what it really means? I tried, and 2 hours of my life is all I have to give to this cause.
