LED Lighting For The Home a Reality

by tec on March 5, 2008

LED lighting for the home is now a reality, for those of you interested in the most advanced technology available.  A few months ago, I wrote about Compact Fluorescent Lighting (CFL) for the home, and this is my follow-up to that.

LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode”, and LEDs illuminate when electrically biased with an electric charge passing through their underlying circuitry.  While Compact Fluorescent Lighting is light-years (no pun intended) ahead of the 100 year-old incandescent light technology, LED lighting is a new beast altogether.  Take lifespan for example:

Light Incandescent CFL LED
Lifespan 1500 hours 10,000 hours 60,000 hours

Examples of an LED replacement bulb and spotlight.

Besides the extraordinary advantage in lifespan, LEDs have other advantages over conventional lighting technologies:

+ LEDs produce more light per-watt than CFLs or Incandescents, beinging markedly superior in power efficiency

+ Solid-State design provides superior durability against external impact damage

+ Dimming capabilities without loss of color tone

+ Frequent on-off cycles do not decrease LED lifespan like they do in other forms of lighting

+ LEDs usually fail by dimming over time, instead of sudden failure

+ Start-up time is very fast, within 100ns, making LEDs ideal for vehicle brakelamps

Some disadvantages of LEDs:

+ Price.  LEDs cost significantly more than conventional forms of lighting initially, and their price competitiveness is only realized when you factor in energy-saving and lifespan costs

+ The light produced from LEDs are easy to focus, but difficult to disperse for illuminated an entire room.  Recent advancements in LED casing design have reduced this problem

+ Blue and White LEDs are approaching intensities that raise concerns regarding the “blue-light hazard“, as defined by retinal injury caused by radiation exposure within the wavelengths produced by these lights

As a person that loves to be at the forefront of technology, I have great interest in LED lighting for homes.  But when it comes to most people, I recommend filling your home up with energy-saving CFLs first, as they are abundant, fairly cheap, and extremely efficient already.  LED lighting still has a ways to go before becoming a standard for the home.  Use it sparingly, when you want to show off a particular room or lighting project.  LED lighting for the home is a reality, if you have enough time, money, patience, and creativity.

A beautiful example of LED home lighting.

  • History: Fainting Room and Daybeds

by futonL on December 19, 2007

In the Victorian Era, daybeds were commonly used as a place for women to rest during the middle of the day. Daybeds, which is a cross between a chaise lounger, bed, and sofa, allows the guest to rest comfortably yet still attain it’s aesthetic appeal. Daybeds are commonly found in rooms called “fainting rooms”.

As you might have guessed, a fainting room was a room that women could rest in when they felt faint. During the Victorian period, the “hourglass” shape was a distinction that most women sought after. To attain a hourglass figure, women would have to wear a corset that tightened the mid-torso to the point where the rib cage and internal organs were pressured. This resulted in women fainting from suffering for long periods of time in a corset.

Now, daybeds are used in many homes that need practical living space with the spacial capacity function. Daybed are sold in roughly four pieces, headboard, two side rails, and the link spring. Optionally, the pop up trundle is used to hold an extra twin size mattress.

Our favorite daybed is the Surrey Honey Pine Finish Solid Wood Daybed because of the sleigh bed design. This particular daybed is made from solid wood and has a large space underneath the bed that can be used for storage or the pop up trundle.

  • Compact Fluorescent Bulbs – A Bright Idea

by tec on November 12, 2007

The future is here.  And you can have it for three bucks.  The Compact Fluorescent bulb represents the single most feasible solution to many of America’s (and the World’s) energy woes.

This little bad boy can help make major strides against global warming, greenhouse-gas emissions, rising energy costs, and America’s dependence on foreign oil.Commonly named the “energy saver” or “swirl bulb”, compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) has come a long way from the sickly unnatural light, slow turn-on, and maddening hum that we expect from them.

Today, CFLs emit natural warm light, turn on very quickly, and run silent.  They also fit in almost any fixture a normal bulb fits in.  And a 20 watt CFL can generate light equivalent to a 100 watt incandescent bulb.

With energy savings of 70% or more, and an average lifespan many times that of incandescent bulbs, most CFLs will pay for themselves within 6 months of operation.  And after that, they will continue to save money for you, for up to 10 years of heavy operation.  Edison himself would be proud. To put it into more perspective, there are roughly 110 million homes in the United States.  If each household swapped out 2 100 watt incandescent bulbs for 20 watt CFLs, the electricity saved could easily power Manhattan island.  In addition, the swap would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking almost 3 million cars off the roads.

Examples of energy-saving lamps: table lamp, floor lamp, torchiere lamp.

In a time where energy is at a premium, and oil is over $100 a barrel, it just makes sense to switch.  Less obvious than at the gas pump, energy costs for the home have also continued to increase.  This is because most of our energy come from non-renewable resources.  In fact, 50% of all electricity in the U.S. come from coal power plants.  Cheap, efficient, and highly polluting.  So cutting down on energy in your house means cutting down greenhouse gasses as well.  It’s like saving the world, one Compact Fluorescent Bulb at a time.

  • People Having Problems Ordering Online

by futonL on November 5, 2007

I’ve posted an eHow article for the general community because I have been noticing that people have been having problems ordering and receiving orders online.

    eHow

Here is the basic summary of what you need to do to order ANYTHING online:

    1. Good contact information. How are we suppose to contact you if you do not give us correct information!?
    2. Preparing for your shipment; imagine packing a large dining table set to send to your mother. Make sure you make arrangements to properly receive the item.
    3. Inspect, INSPECT, I-N-S-P-E-C-T!!! Like the announcement you hear when you arrive on an airplane: “Please be careful about the items in the overhead compartment, they might have shifted during the flight.” Your order left our warehouse in perfect condition, please make sure you receive it as close to perfect as possible, if it doesn’t write it on the Proof of Delivery papers.

Don’t let the delivery people bully you around. They are there to make sure you received you product in good condition.
Got it, now go buy something at http://shop.visiondecor.com

  • Coffee Table Sets for Creative Entertainment

by ericl on October 15, 2007

Many people decorate their homes with traditional style coffee table sets (the abundant yet boring items) when they can be much more creative and functional about it. Take the bore out of your living room or family room by using a more stylish, functional, and down to earth furniture piece. Because there are coffee table sets that don’t have to be old age and look the same for over 20 years, again and again; as many of them now have hidden storage; some even made of leather and fabric and can do a host of things to help you entertain and impress your guests.

The following are a few selections and some tips and advice on why these are great picks for entertaining guests and hosting parties. Make an impression, find your style, and enjoy the decorating.

Storage ottoman coffee table – this is great for casual conversation and use for placing items when you need. You can use a tray on the softer areas or just use the center wood piece to place drinks and food. When not in use and the group conversation can be closer, you can always use the end parts as seating. And better yet, the tops lift up for storage so you can put away all your clutter before guests arrive, such as remotes, magazines, and knick knacks. This is a stylish entertainment piece you won’t find everyday, and will make a great functional coffee table in the right setting for hosting your guests.

    Round leather coffee table
    – now the size of this coffee table ottoman will make a perfect party centerpiece. You can use trays to hold up appetizers and drinks, seating, or resting your feet on. And the drawers can store items and pieces on the bottom perimeter of the table. But most of all, it is just beautiful in the way it presents the wood and leather in a stylish setting and doing so much for you while hosting your guests.

Functional coffee table with storable storage ottomans
    – need more seating or storage but don’t have enough space? Well this is a perfect piece for storing items in the ottomans and then storing the ottomans in the table as well. In a contemporary style room, this is a perfect functional piece. I have entertained many guests with the nice style when I just pull out the ottomans for a seat and have casual conversations with my guests.

High tech lift top coffee table
    – looking for high tech in a traditional item? Try this lift top coffee table than can help you bring your items up to you when you need them. Now you don’t have to crouch over the table top, instead you can have it gas lifted up to show off to your guests and give everyone more access to what they need on the table.

You can always get the traditional style main coffee table with two end tables made of all one color and does nothing for you, if you are looking for something simple and easy to insert into your current decor. But if you are looking to entertain your guests, then looking for something similar to the examples above may add that needed excitement through choosing creative coffee table sets to decorate your home.
