Tips from a Hard Working Slacker

by futonL on September 28, 2009

Okay, I’ve been inspired to write an article about things you can do to make sure that you not only get your work done, but doing it in a way where you don’t stress yourself out.

Since high school, I’ve been pretty good doing ‘just enough’ to get by.  Now, by no means I am I proud of my self-proclaimed ’slacker’ title, but I can honestly say that because of this unusual skill, I get a lot of work done.

Here is my thought, I do not like to do any more work than I have to.  It doesn’t mean that I do incomplete work nor does it mean that I do sub-par work, I just do the work so that it doesn’t have to be done twice.  Who likes to make revisions on a task that could have been completed on the first time? Not only do you look foolish for submitting work you thought was done, but you end up giving yourself more work.

In addition, I setup goals accordingly.  Often, people go into work with very very ambitious goals.  Now, this is a great quality to share with your manager, but if you frequently fail at your goals because they are too ambitious you might be doing yourself more harm than good.  Try and set realistic goals and make sure that you stick to your schedule.

A Slacker’s Tips:

  • Do the work correctly the first time.  Heck, ask questions so that it gives you the ability to work on something and finish it the first time.
  • Schedule you work and stick to it.  Don’t answer an incoming email just because it’s there.  Schedule a time and stick to it.
  • Do not give other people work that you could have finished.  This is hard to explain, but if you know that the work you are doing will cause problems for someone else, please discuss it with them first.  Or else you will be wasting both of your time.
  • Leave a good part of your day for ‘unscheduled’ work.  Setup a time in your day for ‘free work time’ where if your manager tells you he has something important he needs from you, you can pop it into that slot and save the day.  (Hidden reward: if you have an easy day, go ahead and start researching your next purchase on Amazon.)
  • Be an over-achieving team player.  Okay, everyone knows that you work hard.  But keeping to yourself and not joining in on water-cooler conversations about the current deadlines on hand doesn’t show your ‘team work’ attitude.  So what your part is easy and you can breeze through it, if the conversation is about how difficult, share your story in an non-threatening way.
    • Something like “I know what you mean Paul, I had similar trouble with that one line of code.   I had to step away from it for an hour before I could figure what was wrong.”  And NOT like “You still aren’t done yet Paul? I’m already working on my football picks, I hope you get a chance to submit your picks, you were last place last week.”

There are a lot more little things you can do, so that you can be the most efficient slacker at work.  But I’ll save that for next time.

  • What’s the perfect browser? Is there one?

by futonL on September 24, 2009

I believe I am a tech savvy person.  I spend time reading my technology blogs like Engadget and other technology blogs.  With all the improvements we have made in the technology industry, I still wonder why we don’t have a more well-rounded web-browser?  In the day and age where we have quad-core, 1TB, GPU, Snow Leopard, Android OS, and digital 3D we still can’t come up with something as simple as a well working web-browser for everyday use.

    Firefox or Internet Explorer 8

I am a big fan on Firefox.  However, on a slower system, the memory it takes to keep Firefox running is insane.  Aside from System and iexplorer.exe in my Windows Task Manager, Firefox is usually within the top 5 applications that consumes the most memory.  Holy bejeebus!  (Fact check: iexplorer.exe has about 7 instances running 56k of memory each.  Firefox.exe is at 86k by it self).

And yet, IE 8 (reluctantly installed into my Windows XP) doesn’t even take a fraction of what Firefox does.  My only grip about IE is that it is not ’smart’ enough to smooth out all the html and code that Firefox can.  Often programmers code html so that it looks good on all major web-browsers; but because not every browser is made the same the html code doesn’t look perfect.

I wanted to strictly use IE 8 today and to see if I could feel a difference between IE 8 and Firefox.  I have grown accustomed to Firefox over the years, so I wanted to see how IE 8 would hold up during a days work.

    Here are my findings:

    • Aside for aesthetics, IE 8 can do almost everything Firefox can do.  I don’t regularly visit sites that spam the web-browser with hiding windows underneath the main window, but for the most part it’s about the same.  No clear winner:  Tie.
    • Okay, ironically enough, I am using Firefox right now to type up this blog post.  IE 8 could not log me into the administrators part of this blog, so I had to use Firefox to write this.  Now, since this blog is hosted and maintained by a International Studies major (yours truly) there are probably some bugs.  But in Firefox, it works!  Point: Firefox.
    • Often when I browse the internet, Firefox does a great job ‘hiding’ or ‘omitting’ html code that doesn’t work.   This is good for the average user, but sometimes when I want to make a web page look good on IE 8 and Firefox code in Firefox goes MIA.  However, there is a button called “Compatibility View” near the address bar and the refresh button.  This allows ‘website designed for older browsers’ to look better.   Cool.  Point: IE 8.
    • Tabbed browsing is not new to Firefox users, but it is for IE.  Comparing the two, there is definitely a learning curve.  They both function about the same.  There is no clear winner: Tie.

Honestly, the list can go on and on, but unless you have a well ‘geared’ computer IE 8 has already come a long way to satisfy the average user.  My preference is still on Firefox simply because after using Firefox more, I haven’t had any issues with mal-ware and viruses from clicking on random links that pop up NSFW links.

by futonL on September 22, 2009

Most people don’t understand the concept of a ‘carbon footprint.”  But allow me to explain.

A ‘carbon footprint’ is how much indirect or direct greenhouse gas (ghg) is emitted from an individual, organization, event or product.

The debate regarding carbon footprints is “where do you stop the calculation?”  How do you know what is a direct impact or a indirect impact?  As I see it, we should talk about the starting cost of the carbon footprints and not the complete life cycle of the item/action.  You have to end somewhere so that another can begin.

With that being said, by simply writing this blog leaves a certain amount of immeasurable ‘carbon footprint’ compared to writing it on paper and publishing it.

Let me see (without using exact numbers) how much greenhouse gases are emitted by writing this blog post.

    • Starting off by working from home and not working from home.   I actually should be writing this at the office, but I think driving 10 miles to the office emits a good amount of ghg.  Let’s say that’s 100 ghg (just as a reference point, not exact numbers.)  If I decided to carpool into work instead of driving, then I could save 100 ghg for that day.  So, zero.  (Running total: 0 ghg)
    • I need light and my computer so that I can read up enough information about ‘carbon footprints’ and greenhouse gases.  I figure it takes me 20 minutes to do research and using the car as my reference point, let’s say that is about 20 ghg.   1 ghg per minute I am researching this post.  (Running total: 20 ghg)
    • I had to access 1) Wikipedia, 2)my server to host the blog, and 3)Google.   So let’s be fair and say three more computers had to be on while I wrote this article.  And using the computer before, 1 minute per ghg, that’s 20 ghg on wiki and Google (research)  and 50 minutes using my server computer.  (Running total: 110 ghg)
    • Actually writing this post on my computer took me 30 minutes.  So I can edit (yes, I edit this and I still have grammatical errors, so leave me alone), find a picture and publish this post.  That would be 30 ghg.   (Running total: 140 ghg)

So, I had a total of 140 ghg used here.  Now, you can get more detailed and calculate the weight of the extra person in the car, the material used like the computer monitor, the computer, keyboard, etc…but if you decided to purchase a car everyday and use a new computer everyday and do nothing else except to write one blog, you might have a point.  But I am only calculating ’start up ghg’ and since you use these things everyday, the more you get out of the use of an item the less ghg it emits.  Over time, the amount of ghg it emits become more beneficial so long as it isn’t being replaced.

If I wrote this blog on paper:  (this should start out the same).

    • Starting off by working from the office.  But I am carpooling, so, zero. (Running total: 0 ghg)
    • I need light and my computer so that I can read up enough information about ‘carbon footprints’ and greenhouse gases. 1 ghg per minute I am researching this post.  (Running total: 20 ghg)
    • I had to access 1) Wikipedia, and 2)Google.  That’s 20 ghg on wiki and Google (research); a total of 40 ghg (see above; 1 ghg per minute per computer).  (Running total: 60 ghg)
    • Hand writing this post should take me longer to do.  Let’s say 1 hour so that I can edit and look up dictionaries for spelling.  But this emits almost no ghg because the resources I used are already spent.  But I still have to publish this blog post somewhere.  So let’s choose Popular Science.  Popular Science prints about 1.3 million a year so if my article were to appear in a single month that would be 108,334 magazines printed of which lets say it takes 1 ghg per page.  The printing of this article costs would be 108,334 ghg to make.   (Running total: 108,354 ghg)

Before you get your panties in a bunch over my calculation, that’s the initial production cost to type or publish these post.  There are a million other things that happen in the publishing that I cannot even fathom.  Who is to say how many people actually read this post and turned on their computer adding to the ghg, or how many people read the magazine and pass it on to a friend reducing the ghg a fraction.

Now what can you do to leave less of a carbon footprint?  Walk more?  Read during the day instead of at night? Use reusable items like cloth bags rather than paper or plastic?

Okay, now that you’ve read this post, please turn off your computer.  I don’t want to be responsible for the ghg emitted from your computer.  (Even though you are offsetting the initial ghg cost when I wrote this article, you are also adding to it.  Sigh, the debate will never end.)

  • Random: Brushing Your Teeth…Twice!

by futonL on September 10, 2009

So, I started a new brushing teeth routine where I would use half the amount of toothpaste, but brush my teeth twice. It feels a lot cleaner (and looks whiter).

I started to think about the mechanics of brushing ones teeth and it dawned on me.  There are two different things going on.  You are physically scraping any plague and debris from your teeth and gum, and you are chemically fighting cavities with fluoride.  Simple, but it seems like there is some wasted effort here.  Imagine that you have a patio deck to clean and you have one brush and some chemical cleaner.  If you cleaned the deck only once and rinsed it afterward with water, you will notice that the deck only became mostly clean because you probably missed a few places on the deck that was covered with dirt and some removed dirt.  You should rinse the deck off once and then go over the deck again to clean up the places that are still dirty!  Now there’s an idea.

Okay, I am going to get down and dirty on my logic, so if this is already too much information, stop reading now.

    Here are my thoughts:

    1. Brushing your teeth without toothpaste (I’ve done this before) means that you are simply scrapping away the large pieces of food and ‘white stuff’ that collects on your teeth.  Doesn’t feel as fresh, but you can remove a lot of junk from your teeth.
    2. Brushing your teeth without a toothbrush but with toothpaste (and yes I’ve done this before too) won’t remove the obvious pieces of food particles, but chemically the fluoride does some work against cavities.  Tastes better, but you know you have a lot more to do when you get your toothbrush.
    3. Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and a full amount of toothpaste will simultaneously scrap food particles and chemically prevent cavities.  It works, however, if you notice that the toothpaste foams up and mixes with the food particles, it makes you want to spit out all that toothpaste and junk.  What a waste!
    4. This is what I started doing: Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush with half the amount of toothpaste, rinse, and re-apply the other half of toothpaste.  Feels cleaner and mintier.

When you brush your teeth the first time you are getting 80 to 90 percent of your teeth cleaned (I’m not a dentist).  Ironically, it’s that 10 percent of your teeth that gets you into trouble.  (Again, not a dentist.)  However, when you brush your teeth the second time you probably eliminated another 3 to 6 percent more (because you won’t be able to clean 100 percent.).  (I swear I am not a dentist). That will save you on your next dental bill.  (I am not an accountant either.)

Okay, I know this is a weird post, but I thought it was kind of funny rationalizing this in my head so I decided to share with everyone else.

Zero out of Zero dentists approves this post.

  • Hello, I’d like to Hear from You!
  • It’s August, and either you have a kid going back to school in college or you’ve moved to a new pad! Whether it is a dorm room or apartment there’s a budget and space to be concerned with. My friend told me that when he bought stuff for his pad he always considered the price, the quality to last at least 1 year and the movability of that item. So here are a few of my own picks for things (all under $100) to get for a dorm room or apartment.

Youve got to have at least one set of good knives in the kitchen. Because you dont want to be hacking at that piece of bread until you damage the kitchen top. And these are the perfect knives that are sharp, will last long and cheap! Hey, if it can cut sushi it can cut anything... almost.

Some of us are cheap and want to save on the A/C costs. Some of us are also green and want to cut down on energy carbon footprint use. Rather than an ugly plastic fan, this is something I can love to have sitting on my top keep me feeling cool as well as my decor looking cool!

I know a lot of us are pilers. Clothing pilers, meaning we just pile those shorts and jeans and shirts wherever we can. Well, this is a towel rack, but it is also quite useful to pile your clothes on. I always say, if Im gonna wear it within the week, why fold it? just hang it on top of the towel rack in the order of days its gonna be worn. Layer by layer I peel it off to wear :-).
