Follow Your Heart in Good Times and Bad

by ericl on May 15, 2009

Chase your dreams and follow your heart.  That’s common advice many visionaries and leaders give you in America.   But it’s not just a fact of setting a goal and doing something you want because to achieve something you need more than just a desire to get something you want.

Your Heart Knows You Best

Your Heart Knows You Best

Times of Uncertainty
Especially in tough times like these all of us are faced with challenges that are hard to bear.  I feel obligated to make decisions that not only protect my company but also the welfare of my employees where their jobs are at stake.  I’m sure many of you that work for companies (large and small) are just anticipating the bad news about the imminent cut backs or cost saving measures.  Faced with all this stress all of us need something to keep us going in times of uncertainty.

End of Day Satisfaction
So when the road is dark ahead we need more than just our dreams to keep us going.  We need to be doing things day in and day out that we enjoy and of that which gives us satisfaction at the end of the day.  So when you set out to chase your dreams and follow your heart, be sure that it is something that you won’t mind doing even if you won’t be paid for it because that is the attitude that will get you through the tough times.  You may be thinking that’s great but what about for those of you that are “stuck” in something that you don’t enjoy and can’t get out of?

Take Hold of What You Do
It’s never too late to make choices on what you do in daily life as well as for work.  If you find yourself stuck in a rut then it’s best to start small and take tiny steps toward navigating your way to do the things that are productive of which you enjoy.  Because day in and day out, if you get burnt out then nothing is worth doing in the face of uncertainty and overwhelming challenges.  When you can get yourself out of a vicious cycle of doing work  you grunt at then you can gradually pull yourself toward accelerating at things that you enjoy and do it better day after day.

Day in and Day out
My overall point is that once you decide to follow your heart it’s the small things that you can do day in and day out with satisfaction that can lead you to achieving your dream.  Don’t settle for being burnt out or unhappy at the end of the day.  Take action rather than inaction.
