Epidemic or Excitment for All?

by futonL on May 8, 2009

Much of what grabs people’s attention in the news these days is the sense of danger that might be bestowed upon the average American citizen.

Case in point the H1N1 Flu (infamously known as the ’swine’ flu even though you cannot contract this type of influenza from hogs or pork products) which has taken the United States by storm and caused a worldwide fascination/scare with this ‘airborne’ virus.

Why are we so fascinated by these types of news?  I know that I find it interesting and alarming to know that by simply being in contact with people I might be ‘infected’ with this virus.  Why?  Cause it’s dangerous? Yes. Cause it’s new and the cure is unknown? Yes, and yes! (Note: I know there are no such thing as a cures for viruses, but this isn’t a biology lesson, it’s just an article).

This type of scare reminds me of a movie (also SARS from a few years back).  Did you watch the movie “Outbreak” with Dustin Hoffman?  You know about that strain of virus that was contracted by a monkey that almost caused a the US military to take nuclear action to prevent further outbreak in the US.  That movie was sooo great because something like that could actually happen.  Would it happen, probably not, but it’s fun to imagine that it would.

So, what’s next?  Conspiracy theory?  Terrorism by Mexican pigs?  What can we expect next from the media and how will this plot thicken?

Here are my two guesses of how the media will spin this off:

  1. Conspiracy theory?  This could be Obama’s way to distract the American people from all the economic crisises we have been having.   Just think, he just just past his first 100 days and his approval rating is sky rocketing, handling the H1Ni flu virus might be just the thing to keep the American citizen buzzing for the rest of the year!
  2. An Act of Terrorism?  Did you see 12 Monkeys?  The virus could have been launched by a terrorist cell in a plot to distract Americans so that an even bigger danger can go unnoticed.
  3. Global Unity? This could be a way we can come together as Humans to help stop these types of epidemics from happening?  Could this be a Godly action that helps brings us together as one!

Mark my words!!!!!!!!! Haha, jkjk.
