Showering with your Contacts

by ericl on May 6, 2009

I’ve heard that it’s not good to shower with your contact on or swim in a lake/pool or the beach either.  But it seems like swimming with water tight googles is ok because it will keep the bacteria out and your eyes safe.  But how about the shower?

Microbes in the Air?
My brother got contacts a few weeks ago, and the assistant at the counter told him not to wear them in the shower.  I was like, huh? I wear them in the shower sometimes and I didn’t know it was a bad thing.  So what’s the deal?  The assistant said it was the microbes in the humid air tha can get carried into your eyes and onto your contacts.

It’s the Tap Water
Really?  Is it that dangerous?  So I did some searches and found that tap water is not necessarily “dirty” in terms of germs per se, but rather then chemicals in tap water can change the shape of your contacts.  Which makes more sense to me.

Better to be safe with the Eyes
But just to be safe, I think if you wear your contacts and your eyes feel irritated or get red, I’d take the contacts out first to get them rinsed and disinfected and make sure that your eye gets better or checked up before risking injuring them further.  Well, it doesn’t seem as scary as I first thought, but there are small cases where tap water has an amoeba of some sort that can cause major infection in your eye.

I want lasik.
I guess if it comes to my eyes, it’s better to be safe than sorry:  1. I’ll take out my contacts before I shower, 2. I’ll try to dry my hands of tap water before handling my contacts, 3. I hope to get lasik soon :-)
