So, I am heading out of the country this Saturday on May 2, 2009 from LAX and there is a lot of new news regarding the swine flu that has everyone worried about travelers from the US.
It’s a common joke when you are at the water cooler that ‘you might have swine flu if….’ but there doesn’t seem to be any immediate threat of this flu that is different from any other flu virus. According to various articles in CNN and the LATimes, the swine flu is simply a new strain of the flu virus but it does not mean that it is more deadlier than an ‘unnamed’ flu virus that spreads normally.
What am I going to do to prepare for my trip? Here are a few things that I’ll probably do before I make my way to LAX so that I don’t get caught somewhere between LAX and Hong Kong in a quarantined room.
- Packing light: The less you interact with the TSA people the better. Who knows, I might have an allergy attack and find myself sitting in a room by myself 20 minutes later.
- Antimicrobial Hand Rinse: I visited my local Bath and Bodyworks and stocked up my foam and gel antimicrobial hand rinses! You can’t be TOO cautious.
- No Flu Shots: Since the swine flu and regular flu’s exhibit the same symptoms, it would be difficult to detect which flu I have….again, I don’t want to be quarantined.
- Masks? Well, I don’t know how effective that would be if I were to be in actual contact with someone with the swine flu. So long as I don’t touch my face and I wash my hands thoroughly, I should be okay. I guess I prefer fashion over health.
