In one of my previous post I talked about shopping to save the world. And now after reading Frank’s post on supreme seafood soup, I think you and I can eat to save the world. Or rather choose not to eat certain foods to save the world.

The World is Being Eaten Away
But It Just Tastes Soooo Good!
Certain foods taste so good that it’s hard to give up. But it isn’t always about taste. Like eating Shark’s fin soup lends more to eating it for status symbol, not taste. Recall during the height of the British empire where women wore corsets that damaged their internal organs. Or when women in China bound their feet till the bones broke and toes grew bent. The human race has done many things that don’t make sense but makes them look better in the eyes of others.
I’m Rich by Eating Shark’s Fin
So eating Shark’s Fin soup, especially in Asia, makes a statement about your wealth. Another thing that doesn’t make sense but just part of the culture. It’s like (and likely worse than) Americans buying SUVs that guzzle gas and pollute the air. Just a symbol of status that hurts the world. Right?
Make a Consistent Statement
So what kind of symbol can we make by the way we eat? Well, I’ll choose not to eat Shark’s fin when I am served it. And I’ll choose not to order it at a meal. But I think I need to make a consistent statement.
I can’t just choose not to eat shark’s fin but drive around in an SUV (I drive a Prius and proud of it!). I can’t do one thing that claims to save the world while being ignorant to doing other things that hurt it.
So What am I saying?
Well, I think I can choose what to eat to save the world. But a righteous choice is only supported by a righteous life overall. There’s plenty of other things to choose, so as long as I am aware. So I’ll start with making a choice to be consistent with my choice on what to eat and shop. Now let’s save the world!
