So, I am not dietitian or health expert but after cramming for a half marathon I reluctantly signed up for on February 1, 2009 I realized that you cannot simply train your body to physically run 13 miles, you have to condition your body and your mind. This is how I would describe the last two weeks.
Body: Simple advice from me to you…
Getting your body into shape is not difficult. There are plenty of work out schedules that you can follow that would speed up your training. However, the ONE advice I can give you is this:
Good food will provide you good energy so that your body can process energy faster and better.
Look at it this way. With all the refined foods, sugar loaded meals, and complex carbohydrates we eat your body has trouble converting them into energy; energy needed to keep your body going. If you are training, your body needs to be able to process foods better so that you don’t feel tired after the initial surge of energy lost.
Ericl advised me to “eat plenty of fruit, because fruit gives you good energy over a long period of time.” Great tip!
Mind: Be Mentally Prepared
Let’s face it, we don’t like to fail at things. So, the best way to keep yourself motivated is to give yourself plenty of opportunities to try and succeed. I have made it a point to at least get myself to the gym and give my self opportunities to run a few extra miles everyday.
Believe me, I have plenty of things to do during the day, but exercising is something you can do for yourself and something you can feel proud of at the end of the day.
Set yourself up with some simple goals and make sure you keep to it.
