Remember the last few month when we saw a historic campaign between John Mccain and Barack Obama? One thing continues to bother me, even nearly a month after the elections are over. Every once in a while, you’d hear Mccain or the puppet Palin yelling “Drill, drill, drill!” during one of their rallies. In case you didn’t know, they were talking about oil. And they were talking about nature. More drilling in pristine Alaska, more drilling in the gulf of Mexico. Drill, drill, drill.
Something about getting excited and yelling “Drill, drill, drill!” just seems very wrong. Aren’t we at a stage in human social development now where conservation is hip enough to at least “pretend” you are trying to help save the environment? Obama’s campaign of making a big deal about renewable energy, green jobs, and energy independence rang loud and clear for the public, couldn’t Mccain and gang have at least pretended?
Then I realized. They do it because they’re trying to connect with the people who like it. Some people still like it and get all rowdy and have themselves a dance when a 72 year old dude is yelling “Drill, drill, drill!” Can you believe that? To these people, the solution to oil independence from the Middle East is drilling our own oil. That’s like saying the solution to alcoholism is brewing your own alcohol.
And what’s the deal with Palin hunting animals from a helicopter? You might as well pack some AK-47s, grenades, and patriot missiles to take out more caribou. Is it really something to be proud of? The only thing “Drill, drill, drill!” and “Kill, kill, kill!” says to me is that there is a shrinking group of people in this country that are hopelessly out of touch with the 21st century, the trend toward greater efficiency, and the Earth itself.
