Yes, You Can Love Art Too

by ericl on December 25, 2008

Art is everywhere.  Anything can be art depending on how you view it.  Right?  But even if most of us are confused or just don’t care for it, I know all of us can have a love for art.  So how would you appreciate art?

Only you know how art makes you feel.

Only you know how art makes you feel.

Critic to Clueless
I see hundreds of people at places like the Getty looking at oil paintings and sculptures where they seem to know what’s going on.  And thousands more across the country are probably like me where I look at an oil painting and I wouldn’t be able to tell you what I’m looking at.

Only You Know
But what really is an art critic?  Who are they to tell us what to appreciate when looking at a painting or a work of art?  It’s like when I called into a banking customer service once and I told them I was confused, and the service guy responded “No, it’s very clear and not confusing.”  Huh?  I was thinking, “How are you [the service rep] supposed to know how I feel?  And tell me how I should feel?”

Cold Standards
I’ve taken Greek history and some art classes when I was attending college at UCLA.  And I have respect for art.  I know that it takes a lot of talent to create a work of art.  Also the intricate stories behind each piece of art.  But knowing these things doesn’t mean I have to love it.  So how do I get to love art and appreciate it the right way?

Art is Art for You
When I look at a piece of art I may not know where it came from.  I may not know the story behind it.  But I know what I like.  I look at a painting and instead of just looking on the outside, I look inside.  Inside myself.  How I feel, my reaction.  If a piece of art inspires awe and makes me have feelings in a good way then I conclude it’s a good piece of art.  If I feel that I don’t care for it then it’s just not for me.  So the next time you look at a painting or sculpture (or other arts that I am ignorant about) look not to the outside on the surface of the art object but in; where you can really see how you appreciate and come to love that piece of art in front of you.
