The Paperless Revolution – Emails Save Paper

| Welcome to the paperless revolution, where emails save paper, credit card statements are done entirely online, and offices across the world use electronic methods to communicate and store documents. Somewhere in the past 20 years, we’ve gone from information tree cutter to information super highway. It makes me proud.Paper manufacturing is the 2nd most energy-intensive industry in the world economy. Only petroleum is more intensive on a global scale. It is estimated that for each ton of paper manufactured and distributed, approximated 3 to 4 tons of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Include the fact that paper is directly manufactured by trees, and you have an industry that has a very negative impact on the environment. |

| It is estimated that internet and electronic usage has decreased paper consumption in the United States by at least 3 million tons annually in the last 5 years. This is a good sign as the paper consumption in the United States increased from 84.9 million tons to 97.3 million tons from 1990 to 2002. Because of the vague intricacies of measuring paper consumption, and the growth of expected paper usage in general, we can actually expect electronic replacements of paper products to provide even bigger reductions than 3 million tons annually. To actually have a reduction in damaging the environment is a major feat for a booming world populace. We did it with air pollution in the United States, we can do it with paper.But the paperless revolution is not without its fallacies. Office paper use has actually increased in the last 10 years. And electronic copies are often printed out and even duplicated many times. Paperless also represents compatibility issues, regarding the equipment needed to read a document, and the transportability of documents.With the ease and negligible cost of emails comes a slew of problems as well. Could you imagine if people printed email-spam on paper and sent them out all the time? The environmental and monetary costs involved would be unbearable. Spam could not have existed before the paperless revolution. The closest thing was junk mail, and that was not nearly as common as spam is now. In essence, it becomes clear that no matter what form of medium we use for communication, there will always be some form of pollution within it. And it’s up to us to continue cleaning that up as we go along. The paperless revolution was just a skip in the pond. |
