I’m surprised and not surprised at the same time about media driven propaganda. During August 8, 2008 when the Olympics opened up in China, I recall seeing Russian President Putin sitting next to President Bush at the opening ceremonies seemingly having a small discussion. Pretty sure some of it had to do with the conflict between Russia and Georgia and the fighting going on there.
-Russia Attacks Georgia?
The funny thing is when I read about this conflict it was about Russia attacking Georgia. See this video on 8/8/08, the actual opening day of the Olympics on CNN when news broke that Russia attacked Georgia:
I continue to read the news over the last two months, and it appears that the media is portraying Russia (the big guy) is picking on Georgia (the little guy) and the entire conflict is Russia’s fault and overuse of force. Now, I am no one to judge who is wrong or right about wars and conflicts. However, I do find it disturbing that the media is so biased in its reporting. All of us at home trying to live our lives can’t even get real news or believable news.
-What? Wait a minute. Georgia attacked first?
See for yourself on this interview with a 12 year old American girl first presented as someone escaping from the Russians to fly home to safety, when actually she was running from the Georgian troops bombing South Ossetia and Russian troops saved her (and the cut her and her aunt off when they tried to clarify the situation):
Here are few credible articles from news sources outside our media-driven-American world of infomation:
“Speaking at an event organised by the German Marshall Fund in Washington, Ms [Condolezza] Rice acknowledged that Georgia had fired the first shots in the breakaway region of South Ossetia”
“the war began as an ill-considered move by Georgia to retake South Ossetia by force”
Well, hopefully this has nothing to do with the fact that Georgia is an ally and Russia is, well, Russia (having not been much friends with the US since the cold war); but regardless that should not be an excuse of the media, a supposed unbiased source of truthful news/information, to make blatant mis-representations.
Anyways, this gets me thinking. What else has the media “brought” to our attention? In what viewpoints are they dictating to us? How stupid to “they” think we are? Do you feel you aren’t getting the news you deserve but rather some back room conspiracy to manipulate your mind to think a certain way?
