Newegg opens online store site: Newegg Mall

When I was in college, building your own computer was a sport. My friends and I formed a nerd-ring of IT-to-be teens that knew the best way to get the best computer for the least dough is by building it yourself. While this has all changed in the Dell and HP generation, it was very much the case 8 years ago. Add to that the idea of over-clocking CPUs and AMD’s legendary Athlon, and I quickly found myself building computers not only for myself, but also for my less tech-savvy friends.

Back then, it was hard to decide where you should buy your parts from. There were hundreds of PC Parts-Direct websites that sold every component, and nobody seemed to be a major established player. There were even websites that popped up with the sole purpose of rating these computer parts vendors, so you could do your research and not get cheated or wait 6 weeks for your parts to arrive. One vendor stuck out beyond the rest: Newegg. I couldn’t tell if it was the quirky name, or the simple orange and white website, or the fact that they had an enormous selection of items, but I just remembered the name somehow, and always recalled it first when deciding what to buy. Newegg garnered great ratings and had better than average pricing. But after a few purchasing experiences, you knew that the real power of this company is that they just ship to you lightning-fast.Years passed. Hundreds of PC Parts websites folded. Dell and HP have since killed the “build it yourself” mentality with new computers. And Newegg is now a billion-dollar company. 8 years ago, I never would have guessed that they would stomp out all the rest, but they did. And just this year, Newegg opened a new online general merchandise store: Newegg Mall. Think Amazon.

With Newegg Mall, Newegg can now work with other merchants to sell just about anything through the Newegg Mall storefront. And although it’s new, there already seems to be quite a bit of traffic.
