Why Local Furniture Stores are Closing

by futonL on August 28, 2008

If you have driving around your neighborhood, you might have noticed that there are more and more local furniture stores that are closing down and liquidating their inventory.  The reason for the surge of these closures is that more and more people are looking for ways to cut costs by searching for furniture on the internet.

In Ohio:

An area furniture store is trying to move everything out, before it shuts the doors for good.

English Custom Furniture Direct is closing its Boardman location on route 224.

The showroom was shut down for two days last week to get ready for the closing sale which started Friday.

No word yet on when the official last day of business will be.

Arrangements have already been made with a local furniture retailer, to fulfill all outstanding factory warranties after the store closing.

With the economy slowly moving along in 2008, many people are starting to work four day weeks and remotely working from home on the fifth day.   Likewise, many people are turning to the internet to save a few hundred dollars if they can plan and wait for delivery.

The major reasons why people are purchasing furniture online, other than the fact that more and more local furniture stores are closing, is because customers are trying to save a few hundred to a few thousands of dollars and incurring a six week delivery time.  Although delivery times can reach up to four to six weeks, the advantage of such a long delivery time is definitely more dollars than cents.

Internet Furniture Shopping Tip: Major holidays are the best ways to take advantage of coupons and bulk discounts, but usually online retailers do not accept rainchecks, so take advantage of deals while supplies last.
