Economic Stimulus Check Spending Dilemma

by futonL on May 28, 2008

It’s March 28 and i received notification in the mail stating I  should be receiving my $600 checking by March 30.  Now the big question is what should I do with my $600 gift from the US government?  (I think of this check as a gift because I know that this is money I wasn’t expecting to receive).

Here are my thoughts:

  • My first thought was to simply offset my car and insurance payments so that I could save the$600 for an upcoming Hawaii trip in August.  But I can just relax on the beach and eat spam musubi and loco moco the entire time.
  • I could purchase a slightly used refrigerator from craigslist because my old one is leaking.  But, I guess a good leak will just inspire me to clean my kitchen floor more often.
  • I could buy my dad some Laker’s playoff tickets off of eBay.  But spending nearly my entire stimulus check on nosebleed seats at Staples center doesn’t seem like a good investment into the economy.
  • Or I could use my check to offset my gas expenses.  But if that were the case, I should be storing the gas in my pool and sell it for a slightly higher cost after the cost per barrel of crude oil goes past $150.

What I think I’ll do is spend my stimulus check on the small business in my community.  I figure that the small business in my neighborhood relies mostly on the community to run their businesses.  Sure companies like Wal-mart and Costco can save a family a few bucks but when small business can flourish, they can give more back to the community by  sponsoring your local AYSO soccer team or allowing your local school use your water for their car wash.  If more people gave back to their communities, you would find less people filing bankrupcy and giving their homes to finiancial institutions who would sell homes to the first buyer rather than a family who needs it.  Just something to think about.
