Microsoft Surface Coffee Table Interactive Furniture for the Future
| Microsoft recently introduced a new technology called “Surface“, integrated into a coffee table, as their first stab at interactive home furniture for the future. Is Microsoft ready to delve into the vast furniture industry? Or better yet, is the furniture industry ready for Microsoft, the 800lb gorilla of the computer industry? We think so, as the Surface coffee table is extremely useable and downright cool. The Microsoft Surface design is basically a giant touchscreen top placed over a coffee table base. The overall design is actually not unlike a giant iPhone in appearance | ![]() |
and interactivity. Three parts cool factor, one part touchscreen computer, the Surface can display images, play movies, display maps, and even send email. One of the best features of the Surface is it’s ability to connect to other devices. Using connectivity such as Bluetooth, Surface can expand and display data in an organized fashion that’s breathtaking. You can browse lists of contacts, look at pictures, and even transfer files from multiple devices, like pictures from a digital camera to a cell phone, simply by dragging the icons from one device to another.
So how much will one of these bad boys set you back? A whopping 10 grand!! Microsoft expects the prices to drop significantly in the next few years, but until then, we’ll only be seeing limited examples of the Surface, possibly in high-end bars and lounges, or on MTV Cribs. Until then, we invite you to check out some conventional coffee tables while you wait for this piece of interactive furniture for the future.
