With the influx of 21st century widescreen plasma and LCD TVs, entertainment centers and related furniture are sizing up to accommodate for wide-screen TVs. The fact that widescreen TVs do not fit well into entertainment centers designed for old tube or projector TVs has put the brakes on a lot of buying decisions for people looking to replace their old TVs. Instead of spending the $1500 to $3000 required for the new HDTV, people now need to allocate another $1000 or more for a new entertainment center.
The solutions are few. If you have a 3 piece with a tall cabinet on each side of the TV, you could add your own base and stack the new TV on top of it. This is the simplest, and cheapest solution, but finding a base that remotely matches the entertainment center you already have will be hard. Another option is to wall mount the TV in the space between your cabinets, for a sleeker approach.
The main problem most people have when fitting a widescreen TV is that these new TVs do not come with a large base, like their projection screen ancestors did. They usually only come with a small stand that requires the TV to have a cabinet below it. Fortunately, TV cabinets are relatively cheap. If you can get by with just purchasing a TV stand, you can work toward integrating your side cabinets, or buying new ones later. Here are some examples of entertainment centers and related furniture for wide-screen TVs.
