In continuing our environmental series of posts, I hope to help you as a consumer make better eco-friendly buying decisions, especially when it comes to buying eco friendly furniture and home furnishings. This is a quick tip on helping you to make a environmentally friendly decision based on the material the furniture item is made from.
Many forests are being cleared out and run down because of the increased demand for tree-wood products to be made from them. What you can do to re-balance this demand is to select furniture made out of different types of materials. Even metal furniture requires a lot of molding and raw steel material to be burned causing pollutants to be released into the air.
Here are some renewable and alternative resources of materials to make furniture that you can choose from: Bamboo, rattan, wicker, and seagrass are the most ideal for alternatives to the main sources of wood to make furniture in the environment.
These items also have their own taste of style and tropical look to them that brings more to the traditional taste that America has been used to in their furniture preferences.
So, next time you think about purchasing a piece of furniture, think about the alternative materials that will help decrease de-forestation and yet be able to achieve the wood look you desired.
