Do not underestimate the everyday things you do to clean your house that makes all the difference in keeping your wood furniture from lasting a lifetime. Here are a few quick tips that will help you maintain your wood furniture and enjoy the everyday use of it without wearing it out.
Quick tip#1 – Dust the surfaces. Using a regular feather duster or soft cotton cloth be sure to remove that dust from any stagnant surfaces at least once every few weeks. This will prevent the materials in the dust from depositing and bonding to the wood surface which causes impurities in the finish and makes the wood surface easier to be scratched when it is used.
Quick tip#2 – Test before cleaning. There are many wood cleaners and abrasives out there and you can use any which one you prefer. However, my recommendation is to test a hidden part of the furniture with the cleaner before you use it on the entire piece. For example, you can test it on the far underneath part of the table top, apply a little bit to that area and clean it as usual. Then after a few days to a week, go back and check the area for any discoloration or abnormalities. If it looks ok, then go ahead and clean the rest of the furniture knowing that the entire piece will not be damaged by using the cleaner you chose.
Quick tip#3 – Polish and sealant finish. To protect the wood surface, you can purchase a wood polish that sometimes has silicon in it to add an extra layer of protection to the wood. But again, before you apply any polish and/or sealant, be sure to test it first (i.e. tip#2).
More tips to come on housekeeping and maintaining wood furniture, but hopefully these few quick tips will help you better maintain the pieces you have already.
