Tips for Entertaining the Five Senses

by futonL on December 12, 2007

The Food channel always has great ideas on how to entertain your guests. Although they don’t have trendy Must See TV style programs, I have always been interested in food, preparation, and the components that help gives each dish life.

Entertaining The Five Sense

The life of the dish heavily relies on the setting or ambiance. It is the setting that “sets up” the food because not only can you taste and smell the food, but you are able to interact with your food while sitting in your dining chair and using chopsticks. Why does food taste so much better at a baseball game than a home cooked hot dog and nachos? It’s the smell of the open air, the sounds you hear, and the setting you get to enjoy because you are at the game. Likewise, at home, you should welcome your guests by not only making delicious food, but to visually and physically allow them to enjoy the food.

Here are some great tips on entertaining your guests as they eat, drink, and enjoy your home. I will break it down according to the 5 senses (Seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, tasting )

See: Having a visually stunning home and dining room area is a very important aspect in creating the correct ambiance. Dark cherry or cappuccino finish wood are excellent choices.

Touch: A great dining room set should feel sturdy and solid. When your guests interact with the furniture they should notice not only the aesthetic craftsmanships, but also the construction and design.

Smell: A scented candle would accent the room before dinner. Try a festive holiday candle or choose scents that are applicable to the season (e.g. cinnamon for autumn or floral/fruit for spring).

Sound: Great food is usually accompanied by great music. Try playing some light jazz or easy listening from your iPod stereo system would be great to set the mood.

Taste: No doubt the food you serve your guests will be spectacular.

Entertaining can be easy and simple. Include a few simple concepts when you plan your party will make all the difference.

Bon Appetit,
